Developed as a solo project over several years, Parasited Will combines arcade-style fighting, dungeon missions, RPG progression and crafting. We spent around three hours with the PC version and came away with quite a positive impression. More on what we enjoyed after the trailer!

Punches, Parries and Parasites
Parasited Will lets us serve up a healthy dose of regular attacks and combos, alongside dodging, blocking and parrying. It’s cool to see how the concentration system rewards clean hits and well-timed defensive moves. If we build up enough of it, we can activate Rage Mode for a burst of extra power and mobility. The grappling hook adds another wrinkle, pulling smaller enemies towards us or helping us close the distance on bigger targets. This cute little grappling hook is not just another way to hit things. No, no. She can be used to navigate parts of the environment, too. She’s a beauty, she is. We call her Linda.

Our feelings about the fighting are somewhat mixed, but before you walk away, please know that the good outweighs the bad. We enjoyed the variety of options and the faster, more aggressive moments, but the action isn’t consistently as smooth as we’d like. Some parts of the combat feel satisfying, while others can come across as awkward or repetitive. There’s a fair amount to learn, too, and with so many mechanics available, not all of them feel equally comfortable to use. Still, we appreciate that the developer has attempted something more elaborate than a basic hack-and-slash, particularly in a game of this size and price.

A World to Explore, Gear to Chase
Missions in Parasited Will take us into hostile areas where we can bash some heads and grab much-needed resources, which we later use for crafting and equipment upgrades. Different weapons and armor add variety, especially when we take into consideration that the game offers three warriors with distinct specialties. One warrior combines close-range weapons with archery, another favors firearms, while the third focuses on hand-to-hand combat. We spent most of our time with the bow and arrow, but we also tried our hand at using firearms and enjoyed them quite a lot. There are also options for cooperative play and PvP, but we didn’t get to check those out since we couldn’t find a buddy to play with.

Parasited Will has ambitious ideas, enjoyable combat possibilities and enough progression systems to make exploring its world appealing. We can’t judge the full campaign after just three hours, and we wouldn’t call the fighting consistently polished, but we’ve had a good time with what we’ve played so far. For anyone who enjoys inexpensive, system-heavy indie action RPGs and doesn’t mind a few rough edges, this is worth a look.
