Tempest Rising: The Return of Classic RTS Action in a Post-Apocalyptic World

In the near future, planet Earth is tragically devastated by a global nuclear conflict, leaving survivors in an uncompromising struggle for scarce remaining resources and fragile power. Emerging into this post-apocalyptic setting is Tempest Rising, a title that marks a significant return to the roots of the real-time strategy (RTS) genre, drawing direct inspiration from 90s and early 2000s cult classics, with clear parallels to the legendary Red Alert series. Tempest Rising implements a modern approach to production and technical execution, promising an intensely deep strategic experience that confidently carries the mantle of genre pioneers, offering a title sure to be highly appreciated by nostalgic RTS enthusiasts.

One of the Best Recent Strategy Games

Focusing on an authentic RTS experience, Tempest Rising puts players in the shoes of commanders from two distinct factions, each with unique traits and goals in the fight to dominate the devastated planet. The Global Defense Forces (GDF) are presented as a highly mobile and technologically advanced military corps, focused on rapid interventions and superior firepower. On the other hand, the Tempest Dynasty is portrayed as a hardline and uncompromising force, driven by a desperate need for survival and adapted to the harsh conditions of a post-apocalyptic world (Kane, anyone?).

Each faction features its own asymmetric roster of units, unique tech trees, and specific economic models, generating a wide array of strategic options and playstyles. Before every mission, players access two key categories that fundamentally shape their impact on the battlefield. On one hands, the Doctrine System allows stat upgrades for available units and structures, as well as access to specific new abilities. On the other, the Arsenal offers the opportunity to unlock significant active and passive abilities that can decisively sway the outcome of battles.

Playing with these options is the most fun we’ve had. Carefully considering and strategically investing in these categories introduces an intellectual challenge that significantly increases mission replayability, offering different outcomes and tactical approaches with every playthrough.

Unit Dynamics and Gameplay

Returning to the units, each possesses specific abilities that define its uniqueness on the battlefield. For instance, drone operators can deploy mechanical flying allies to execute fast and efficient long-range attacks. Similarly, Sentinel-class vehicles are equipped with powerful anti-infantry weapons, but can also swap ammunition to mark enemy targets, making them more vulnerable to critical hits from allied forces. Meanwhile, the Riot medical unit can deploy a defensive dome that heals nearby allied units.

Every unit is specialized for a specific role with distinct advantages, but also vulnerabilities that opponents can exploit. A unit might be exceptionally effective against one type of enemy while easily overpowered by another. The core task is to identify these strengths and weaknesses, maximizing efficiency while exploiting enemy vulnerabilities. When chaos completely takes over the battlefield, moments arise where you feel entirely lost and overwhelmed—delivering an unforgettable experience where every defeat directly results from slow reflexes and insufficient strategic thinking. The phrase “git gud” definitely applies to Tempest Rising.

The core mechanics rely on classic base building, a hallmark of the golden era of RTS games. Players must strategically plan and expand bases, efficiently manage limited resources, and produce diverse military units. Combat is fast-paced, fluid, and intense, where strategic foresight, tactical skill, and efficient unit command are vital.

Campaigns and Presentation

The game promises a deep, rewarding gameplay loop centered around strategic thinking, rewarding adaptability. For example, targeting explosive barrels triggers chain reactions that devastate surrounding structures and units, while drones allow safe long-range bombardment. Tempest Rising continually introduces fresh elements and mechanics across its two campaigns.

It offers two detailed single-player campaigns, each consisting of eleven missions featuring complex narratives told through high-quality animated sequences. Secondary objectives encourage thorough map exploration to uncover valuable resources.

Voice acting is exceptionally high quality, complemented by interactive options allowing players to ask questions about current missions for deeper context. A dynamic soundtrack transitions smoothly from ambient sci-fi themes to intense techno-thriller sequences, creating a brilliant audio-visual harmony. Parallel to this, the graphical engine is exceptionally well-optimized, delivering visually striking graphics without compromising the fluidity of dynamic action. Each map features distinct environments providing strategic terrain suited for base building, resource scouting, and tactical maneuvers behind enemy lines.

Multiplayer and Customization

For competitive players, Tempest Rising offers robust multiplayer modes, including skirmish against AI, custom games against friends, and a competitive ranked system utilizing Glicko-2 ratings to test skills globally. Additionally, in-game customization options let players tailor experiences to their preferences across both single-player and multiplayer modes. Tempest Rising emerges as a refreshing and potentially revolutionary title in the RTS genre, honoring its roots while innovating in key aspects. With its focus on classic base building, asymmetric factions, detailed campaigns, and a balanced multiplayer ecosystem, it is easy to confidently recommend the game to all nostalgic RTS lovers.
