Woman Simulator Review: Cooking, cleaning, laundry and trying to keep the hubby happy

We play all kinds of games and whenever we sit down after work and put our headphones on, we want to escape bitter reality and do all kinds of things closely connected to chaos incarnate. So, you’ll forgive us, dear reader, if we’ve never washed our dishes, done our laundry, cleaned our toilet and then start playing a game that’s all about washing dishes, doing laundry and cleaning the #%!? toilet! And yet, here we are. We play Woman Simulator and rethink all the choices that led us here.

In our house outside of our real house, we get a list of chores to work through each day. We cook meals, wash dishes, vacuum, mop floors, clean windows and toilets, water plants, trim hedges, do laundry and, of course, iron clothes. Laundry is one of the more involved jobs. Yup, we have to collect and sort clothes, choose the appropriate washing program and detergent, then deal with drying and ironing afterwards. It’s just like real life. It’s just like real life. No, we didn’t write that same sentence by mistake. We felt it needed repeating. Cooking requires following recipes and keeping an eye on the timer, while the dishes can turn into a timed challenge where we have to wash eight of them before the clock runs out. Exciting, right? We hope you didn’t think that. We hope you don’t find a strange satisfaction in moving through the house and getting everything done. We sure pretended like we didn’t.

There’s no need for a dishwasher. You are the dishwasher.

Our character has a morale meter that drops as we work. Our husband’s mood (yes, we have one of those too) needs to stay high enough to avoid trouble. Taking a bath restores morale, flattering the husband improves his mood, and better cleaning equipment can be purchased through the computer to make some jobs faster. And before you ask, sure, there are also household bills to pay. Refusing to pay for water or electricity can leave us without them for the rest of the day and, trust us when we say it, you don’t want that.

Between chores, you explore the house like a good little zombie that you are because there are things to find beyond the obvious cleaning jobs. We can discover money and documents, use the computer for purchases and uncover information that changes the way we look at the whole situation. Over seven days, the game introduces a small mystery involving a USB drive and an investigator, with different endings depending on what we do along the way. So there’s that too, snooping around…

The chores aren’t particularly deep on their own, but managing them alongside morale, money, equipment and (we can’t believe we’re writing this) the husband’s mood can make this somewhat interesting for people who don’t do all those chores in real life. We don’t know why we came here but, despite our greatest efforts, we stay a bit for the absurdity. Digital or not, that laundry isn’t going to wash itself.
