theHunter: Call of the Wild is an amazing hunting simulator and, for years now, has been our go-to destination whenever we want to relax in a beautiful place while hunting all kinds of animals. It has been around since 2017, and if you visit its Steam page, you’ll find more than 60 DLCs for the game. Adding another set of weapons isn’t going to change the game in any fundamental way, but the Old West Weapon Pack does give us three very different firearms to take into the reserves: the Hween .45-90 Buffalo, Humphrey 10G Coach Gun and Maijo .44-40 Special. They look, sound and feel quite different from the modern equipment we’ve spent so much time using, which makes the pack more interesting than simply adding three more guns to an already huge collection.
A Trip to the Old West
The Hween is a single-shot falling-block rifle based on the Sharps Model 1874. The Humphrey is a double-barrel 10-gauge shotgun, and the Maijo is a single-action revolver based on the Schofield. All three use the look and feel of 19th-century firearms, with black-powder ammunition and the animations to match. All that’s left for you is to shout Yee-haw and hope you don’t scare the fauna.
The weapons look at home in theHunter, but they also give our loadout a completely different character. The smoke from the Coach Gun is especially noticeable, while the older mechanisms give all three weapons more personality than another set of modern firearms probably would, which is understandable.
But, please not that there isn’t much more to the DLC than that, though. This is a small weapon pack.
Three Different Options
The Hween covers animal classes 4–9, while the Maijo covers classes 2–5. The Coach Gun is more unusual, with its ammunition determining whether it covers classes 1–2, 4–7 or 6–9.
If you’ve already spent a lot of time with theHunter like us and want something that makes your familiar reserves feel a little different then this pack will give that variety.
A Small Addition
There isn’t much point pretending the Old West Weapon Pack is something bigger than it is. It’s a $4.99 DLC with three weapons. We enjoyed having something new to take into reserves we’ve already visited many times. The Old West theme gives these weapons plenty of personality, and their different designs and limitations make them a more interesting addition than three more modern firearms would have been.
