We love strategy games primarily because of that relaxing—at least for us—slow burn. There’s the quiet early game, the base building, and then the long wait before the armies actually meet. Rattleaxe Games, for some reason, decided to take that from us. In D.O.T. Defence, they are perfectly okay with dropping us right into the messy part by smashing RTS mechanics and wave-based tower defense together. Instead of the long wind-up, matches usually wrap up in about ten minutes. We thought we wouldn’t like this concept, and yet, we ended up loving it, even though we struggled to hold our ground from the very first second. More on that after the trailer jump!

Less Clicking, More Panicking
As we mentioned in the intro, in D.O.T. Defence you start with a base and need to grab territory fast. But, contrary to what you might think, there’s no real micromanagement here. It all comes down to drawing a path, pointing our army in a direction, and hoping for the best. What happens afterward is in the hands of the AI. Sure, you can watch the chaos unfold with the automatic movement and shooting. Or you could roll up your sleeves and have your worries quickly shift toward financial headaches. Who knew that war was so expensive?

For some reason, we were always broke. We felt like we were constantly juggling stuff, jumping from building factories for troops to mines for cash. Then there was the pressure of territorial occupation and building new turrets on freshly conquered grounds. Speaking of which, those turrets matter a lot. Pushing forward usually left our own backyard wide open. It’s like this constant battle of slapping down cannons, then selling them, or moving them around to block whatever the enemy sends.

The Big Map: A Messy Board Game
With the 1.0 launch, they added Global Domination mode. It’s easy to look at this mode and think, huh, what a cool board game. It’s a 4X-lite experience where you move armies around a persistent map, fighting over spots that give you better income. It’s like playing a different game, with less frantic clicking but more thinking ahead. The factions have some wild map powers to mess with the environment (like bombing, making you protect your soldiers by building sandbags in the last minute), and the stakes feel way higher.

S.S.S.: Short. Sweet. Stressful.
D.O.T. Defence is a fast little strategy game with a bite. It drops the boring parts of the genre, but it demands a lot of thinking on the spot. We wish things would have been easier; we don’t remember the last time a game made us hold our breath. But, then again, when we finally outplayed the AI or a buddy, we felt like tactical geniuses. It’s a great sense of accomplishment. And the pixel art looks sharp. It does a ton to push that core loop. So, don’t think twice about this game, open a cold one and start sending them soldiers to battle.
