Canyon Cross is a Messy, Explosive Encore

We might have beaten the Warlord in the main game, but that’s not reason enough to leave this post-apocalyptic universe. This DLC has been out for a while now, but we didn’t get the chance to check it out when it released. So now, we decided to stop postponing the clash with the new raider general.

This time around, you’re at the gates of Canyon Cross and you have been given bigger guns to solve the same old problems. It’s a short but good DLC. As for why, let’s get into it after the trailer!

Tires, Traps, and Lightning

Mechanically, the game plays in pretty much the same way as the base game. You pause the chaos, tell your squad where to shoot, and unpause to watch the mess happen. You can, of course, still sneak around if you want, but this time around the game really wants you to be loud.

The best part about the DLC is the Scraptrack. You don’t have to let your imagination run wild to get a feel for what that is, since it’s exactly what it sounds like. It is death on wheels—a spiked, armored car that lets you literally run down raiders into the dirt. You can also hack an old military satellite to call down actual lightning strikes; here, Zeus is on your side. By the end, we found ourselves in a massive base defense mission. Raiders just swarm the settlement from every direction. We just hope you’re ready for this. As all hell breaks loose, you will have to keep your people alive.

Pathfinding is still a slight problem, especially when you try to squeeze your clunky armored car through a narrow path, or when you try to get your squad through tight doors. It has that standard tactical jank, but it works. Especially the new weapons—they manage to reinvigorate the fights in amazing new ways.

Hey, did you know that we also did an interview with the devs? Yup, some very cool and insighful anwers!

Riding Out the Storm

The DLC is a good enough reason to drop space lasers on the bad guys. The final defense missions actually force you to use the new elite guns instead of just hoarding them in your inventory. Be prepared to have an additional five hours of fun if you liked the base game.
