Pigeon: A Love Story Demo Flies into Steam

Developers Wristworks and Tiny Dragon Games recently launched a playable demo on Steam alongside the London Games Festival. In Pigeon: A Love Story you step into the role of a pigeon. Guess what you do? No, not that, pooping on heads seems like it’s not part of the game (yet? fingers-crossed). But, it is cool that the sprawling city is realistically scaled. The sole goal isn’t to rack up points or survive also. No, no, my good, little pigeon man. It is simply to track down one specific bird out of thousands to find your match. It is meant to be a quiet, low-stakes alternative to fast-paced modern releases. The demo sings. We hope that’s also the case with the whole game (pooping or otherwise).

Surprisingly serene premise

The search is challenging because of the sheer scale of the environment. The developers (God bless their pigeon loving hearts) have built a background system that fills the sky with hundreds of thousands of autonomous, non-playable pigeons. They are all moving independently through the map. Finding your target means carefully scanning this massive, constantly shifting crowd. You are thinking about the needle and the heystack thing, aren’t you?

There are neither combat mechanics, nor tight timers to manage here. There is, however, an opportunity for a nice, releaxing weekend and progress that requires patience and a willingness to just float above the city. You might think that observing the flock until you spot the right bird is like watching paint dry. It isn’t. It could, but not with this game. This demo is super chill and fun.

Central London, here we come!

If you do decide to spread your lovely digital wings (well, more like stare at thousands), the demo opens up to a 1:1 scale recreation of Central London. Yes, quite ambitious. The devs have plans to add exact replicas of New York and Tokyo for the final release. Here’s the best part, are you ready? You don’t have to stare at birds alone! There is a multiplayer option where two people can share the airspace. You can work together to comb through the sky, turn the hunt into a friendly race, or try to find each other in the crowd.

We tried to be somewhat funny with this preview, but joking aside, this is a cool demo. The devs seem clearly talented and they are doing a great job at realizing their unique vission. Check the demo. If you crave the atmosphere without the effort, a passive mode strips away all objectives. The demo becomes a soothing, music-driven screensaver of urban birdwatching. Of a sort. It works.

Pigeon: A Love Story is scheduled to be released on Steam in 2026.
