Odd Town is a new retro-style game launching on Steam in September. Created by solo developer The Flying Baguette and published by HYPERSTRANGE, it is a first-person mystery set in a small, highly interactive world.
The story takes place in a peculiar town where your car breaks down and leaves you stranded. Shortly after you arrive, locals begin to disappear. You have to figure out what is happening while trying to make enough money to fix your car and eventually leave.
You can work normal jobs during the day, like baking treats or cleaning the local movie theater. At night, things get a bit more chaotic as you can break into stores, steal, or sell drugs to make extra cash. People also remember your actions and will adjust accordingly.
You also have to carefully avoid the police. If you get arrested, you can use tools like crowbars or pliers to break out of jail, but each escape method only works once. If you run out of ways to escape, the game is over.
The developers describe it as a compact experience that respects your time, so it’s not a massive sandbox filled with meaningless tasks.
To us, it looks grimy and it’s an instant reminder of PS1 classics. And those single-use escape tools sure sound brilliantly stressful. As fans of Cruelty Squad and Thief, we are definitely keeping our eye on the title!
