Glowing game controller surrounded by various gaming icons, weapons, potions, and UI elements

Gaming News Roundup #1

We’ve put together a quick list of some recent gaming updates we found interesting. Dig in and find out a bit about:

  • A fast-paced platform brawler inspired by the art of Japanese puppetry.
  • An emotional visual novel about answering calls from the dead just before the end of the world.
  • A gothic-steampunk action-adventure game set in a world plagued by nightmares.
  • A realistic medieval MMORPG featuring territory control and a player-driven economy.
  • A chaotic, first-person multiplayer party game all about maximum schoolyard mischief.

Bunraku

First up, we spotted a new game from Colombian indie team Efecto Studios called Bunraku. It’s a fast-paced platform brawler inspired by Japanese puppetry. The combat revolves around dashing, parrying, and using ninjutsus, all happening in front of a live in-game audience that reacts to the fight. We thought it was cool that it supports up to 8 players, either locally or online, in changing PvP arenas.

It’s currently in development for Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, and PS5, and there is a free playtest running on Steam until June 14.

Schrödinger’s Call

We also caught Schrödinger’s Call at the recent Women-Led Games Showcase. Developed by Acrobatic Chirimenjako, it’s a visual novel with a very distinct picture-book style. The story follows Mary, a girl with no memory who spends the final moments before the end of the world answering calls from strangers caught between life and death.

The game is out now on Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. If you want to try it out, there’s a free demo available, and we noticed they are running a 10% launch discount until June 11.

Koshmar: The Last Reverie

During that same showcase, we got a look at a new gameplay trailer for Koshmar: The Last Reverie by Purple Ray Studio. It’s an action-adventure game that mixes gothic and steampunk styles. You play as Violet, a lucid dreamer dealing with a world affected by a sleeping plague. The developers mentioned it blends roguelite mechanics with RPG elements, and your choices directly impact Violet’s state of mind. It’s in development for PC and consoles, though we don’t have a specific release window to share just yet.

Gloria Victis

In MMO news, we were glad to see that Gloria Victis is officially making a comeback on June 17 as a free-to-play title. The game was actually delisted back in 2023 when its original studio closed, but publisher gamigo has picked it up to bring it back online. If you played before the shutdown, you’ll be able to recover any premium skins you purchased. The team is also already working on a major post-launch content update called the State of War.

Hijinks High

Finally, we wanted to mention Hijinks High, the debut game from Sackbird Studios—a new independent team formed by former Elder Scrolls Online developers. It’s a first-person multiplayer party game centered around causing absolute chaos in a school with up to five friends. You can grab and throw almost anything to pull pranks, but you also have to manage your character’s energy and bodily functions by eating snacks and drinking sodas. Hijinks High is currently in the works for PC and consoles.
