We’ve all been there. We’ve planted enough pixel-art potatoes and saved enough crumbling grandfatherly farms to last a lifetime. So, when the German four-person team at VoodooDuck announced a farming sim where your “plot” is a boat pulled by a massive, adorable sea monster, I was immediately curious.
Collector’s Cove isn’t trying to be the next high-stress survival sim. It’s a quiet, drifting adventure that swaps tilling soil for spatial planning on a ship’s deck.

Farming on the High Seas
The core loop here is surprisingly simple: you navigate a floating farm across four distinct climate zones. Instead of fighting monsters, your main “enemy” is a lack of space. You have to figure out how to fit your crops, crafting stations, and fishing gear onto the deck while chasing down rare “Fabled” plants to fill your Compendium.
The standout feature is your companion, the Fablefin. It’s essentially a giant, customizable marine dinosaur that acts as your engine. You feed it, pet it, and eventually dress it up in tiny pirate hats. It’s shamelessly cute, and the “blessings” it provides—like faster swimming—actually make the exploration feel rewarding rather than a chore.

Total Zen (Maybe Too Much?)
One thing to know before diving in: there is zero combat. No stamina bars, no passing out at midnight, and no enemies. While this makes for a perfect “podcast game,” some critics have argued the experience can feel a bit hollow after about 15 hours because there aren’t many NPCs to bond with. It’s just you, your dino, and the ocean.
Technically, the game is remarkably solid for such a small studio. It’s a joy on the Steam Deck (though you’ll want to stick to Medium settings to save your battery), but it’s unexpectedly demanding if you try to push it to 4K on a PC.

Key Features:
- Floating Farm: Grow crops directly on your ship’s deck while moving through the world.
- The Fablefin: A customizable dinosaur companion that pulls your home and provides buffs.
- Climate Diversity: Four unique regions with specific flora and fauna requirements.
- Collector’s Compendium: A deep codex system for cataloging rare and “Fabled” variants.
- No Penalties: No stamina bars or “passing out” at midnight—play at your own pace.
The “Jank” and the Genius
VoodooDuck clearly knew they couldn’t polish every single 3D collision with just four developers, so they did something brilliant: they included a dedicated “I’m Stuck” button in the menu. If you get wedged between a rock and a ladder, you just teleport out. It’s a self-aware move that I wish more indie devs would adopt.
Also, for some reason, there’s no jump button. You’ll find yourself “waddling” around small obstacles quite a bit, which can be a minor annoyance when you just want to get to a ladder.

🌟 Fun Fact Sheet:
- Dino Hats: You can equip your Fablefin with hats, including a crown and a pirate tricorn.
- Non-Violent: The only “projectile” in the game is a plunger-gun used to scavenge floating crates.
- Supporter DLC: A $5 Supporter Pack exists, which is almost entirely dedicated to extra cosmetics for your dinosaur friend.
The Verdict
Collector’s Cove is a meticulously paced escape. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it relocates the wheel to a very charming boat. If you’re looking for high stakes or complex social systems, you won’t find them here. But if you want a polished, tension-free space to organize plants and put crowns on a sea monster, it’s a total gem.
VoodooDuck proved that you don’t need a massive team to make a world that feels worth exploring—you just need a good hook and a very cute dinosaur.
