Hacking, Slashing, and Keeping the Beat in the Alpha Nomos Demo

If your two favorite gaming pastimes are dungeon crawling and keeping a beat, you might want to check out the new demo for Alpha Nomos. It’s a weird, vibrant mix of hack-and-slash action and rhythm mechanics that recently got a playable preview.

You play as Cello, who finds herself stuck in a musical world that’s been completely overrun by crazed, malfunctioning puppets. You can’t just button-mash your way to victory, thought. You actually have to sync your attacks to the soundtrack. If you manage to catch the rhythm, you can string together huge, chaotic combos. If you just flail around, you’re going to have a bad time.

The demo that’s available is a great way to see if you have the rhythm for it. It walks you through a quick tutorial to nail down the timing system and hands you your first weapon: the SaXword (which is exactly what it sounds like). After that, you’re let loose into the game’s roguelike structure to run through a few early areas, smash some wooden enemies, and meet a few of the bizarre locals.

Honestly, the coolest part of the preview build is how the upgrade system works. When you grab power-ups during a run, you aren’t just tweaking your damage stats or attack speed. You’re actively changing the audio mix. The abilities you pick up to help track down Cello’s missing crew change the way your moves sound, meaning your current build literally remixes the soundtrack while you fight.

It’s a genuinely neat concept that blends music and combat in a really satisfying way. If you want to test out your rhythm, the Alpha Nomos demo is free and available to download right now.
